This is me ....

This is me ....

Two new things have happened to me this month. The first is that I've taken a studio in town - town being the mighty metropolis of Invercargill city, an hour or so from my house. This is so that my 12 year old son can attend a boys only high school without having to board at the local hostel - we tried that .... and it didn't work. So far so good. The studio's working out a treat. I have developed a "well I'm here now I might as well work" ethic, which means I get a LOT more done. The second thing that happened is that I turned 38 and for my birthday my husband bought me a Fitbit. I've never been a fan of these things although my sisters and my mum think they're great and track each others steps as a bit of friendly competition. So I set it up yesterday ... and then sat down to work ..... and work .... and it turns out that I don't actually move much when I'm working! My watch kept nudging me to move every hour - which is really distracting when you're trying to draw all those little circles, or trying to keep a straight line. So today I made a big effort to get outside and walk during my lunch break. What made it easier is that my studio is across the road from Queens Park - an 81ha (200acre) reserve in the middle of the city. I love walking. I used to walk a lot. Working on the Milford Track meant that I could indulge my passions for walking/day dreaming/bird watching and being out in the bush. Being out and about reminded me of all the things I miss when I'm sitting in my studio, such as the first signs of spring. So I took the opportunity to photograph these gorgeous crocus's announcing spring's arrival. Happy days.
